and confusing?
Do you realise
that, every time you buy
a carpet, you’re paying too much for it.
Often you're sold the wrong quality for your
needs with essential information hidden from you.
Brushed under the carpet, you could
say!
But there are dozens of ways you could cut your costs to make your money go
further.
Save Money. Save Time. Save
Trouble.
Want to know how to buy carpet and pay
less for it?
As a former owner of a large retail carpet warehouse, with over 37
years hands-on experience in the industry, I am well
qualified to give advice on how to buy carpet and save money.
|
I know that with proper knowledge and the right advice you
can avoid over-paying for your next carpet and
save yourself a lot of money.
|
With this carpet buying guide-book you can do just that.
'How To Buy Carpet And Save Money'
The aim of the book is
to:
- Prevent You Wasting Your
Money
- Remove
Confusion
- Avoid Serious
Disappointment
- Stop You From Being Ripped
Off!
- Reveal The
''Trade Secrets' That Give You A Big
Advantage
I've taken years to learn all of this,
but you can learn it in just a few
minutes.
Tales of Poor Customer
Care
As a carpet
consultantI get to hear about some rather dodgy retail
sales methods, and tales of indifferent customer care over defective
carpet.
If only you knew how simple it is to buy carpet
and save money - without being ripped off.
I can tell you how.
You don't need any special skills to get
the best price for your next new carpet.
All you need is some qualified guidance.
With easy how-to-do-it, simple to
apply, detailed tips and advice.
The Newly Wed, the Retired Couple and the Elderly Lady
First, though, I want to tell you about
three consumer problems that concerned me.
One motivated me.
Another saddened me.
And the other troubled
me.
So much so, that I was compelled to ‘go public’
and reveal the safest way for you to buy the right carpet and avoid confusion while
saving money... all at the same time.
What happened to them shouldn’t happen to
you.
Let me explain…
The Inexperienced Newly Wed
One afternoon a few years ago (when I ran my own
retail carpet warehouse) a young woman called in to my showroom to buy carpet for her new
home.
Let’s call her Sarah.
Sarah explained to me that she was recently
married and had just received the keys to their first home.
Now she needed to furnish it, and she was on a
carpet-buying mission.
She confessed that she really needed some
help.
This was the first time in her life that she had
bought a carpet, and she didn't have a clue where to start.
To her, it was like being in a foreign country,
not speaking the language and without a guidebook - she was bewildered and didn’t know what
to ask for, or how to choose.
In addition, she didn’t have a lot of money to
spare; the house purchase, and all that goes with it, left her on a tight
budget.
So, I had to keep the price down for her to save
money.
At this point, I felt that I should explain the
basics to Sarah, from scratch (give her a ‘mini course’ on carpet fibres and suitability)
before she could even think about what colour and style to buy.
The Pushy Salesman
Then she told me that she had just come from a
major retailer’s shop who was promoting carpet at huge discounts, but somehow she didn’t feel
right about it. The salesperson had little product knowledge and was ‘pushy’ into the
bargain.
When we compared her notes of the other shop’s
prices to mine, on a like for like basis, I discovered that they had boosted the price
advertised to be able to offer a massive discount.
My carpet was priced at £12.95 a square metre,
the other shop had a price of £24.95 - on the very same product!
At the same time, she told me about all the
extra costs they stuck on, that when added together made the total cost beyond her budget. To
add insult to injury they also expected her to pay the whole bill
up-front.
She told me that she left their shop irritated
that the sales staff were less than competent, believing that she had been
misled.
She was annoyed - to say the
least!
Sarah eventually made her selection from my
samples and paid me a deposit.
As she left my shop, she paused to thank me for
helping her.
She was now confident about her purchase, much
better off financially and better informed for the future.
“You should write a book,” she said. “I’d buy
it."
And that got me
thinking.
Yes, I should do it – but when would I find the
time?
Stop Paying Too Much – It’s
Criminal
Sarah had found out about a classic trade
rip-off.
The retailer arrives at a selling price he wants
for the carpet then sticks an extra whack on top (called an up-lift) often as much as 50% -
sometimes by 100% or more.
So a carpet with a normal selling price of £15
square metre carpet becomes £30 a square meter.
Then it's advertised with a huge
discount.
Some bargain that is - at double the original
retail price!
And remember that the original price already had
a retail profit margin built in to it.

Carpet Remnant Bargains?
The Trading Standards Officer Called
I recall when a Trading Standards Office called
in to see me on one of his routine visits and I raised the subject of this practice with
him.
He said there was nothing that could be done
about it.
He explained
that the consumer has the freedom to shop
around and accept a price that they feel
comfortable with.
That might be so,
but how does an unsuspecting consumer
know what’s going
on?
The flashy adverts in the papers are very
cleverly presented to imply that the large discounts are a bargain.
Believe me, they’re not.
What’s important here is that you should pay
a fair price, know what you want, and how to get it.
|
If you
were a gardener, you would know how to buy plants that had a chance of surviving in
your garden. If you were a car mechanic, you would know what to look for in a second
hand car. If you were a builder, you would know the best place to go to pay trade price
for bricks and sand.
|
So it follows that you're not a carpet expert,
so how should you know how to buy a carpet?
When You Can't Live With It Anymore . .
.
Thinking about buying a new
carpet?
This will often be because your existing carpet
is either grubby, worn out or just plain out of date.
You decide that it's time for
something new, fresh and fashionable.
A change of colour and a stylish texture is
required to perk you up; to help you feel better about your
surroundings.
So, naturally, you decide to visit your local
carpet shop.
As a carpet buyer, about to spend a lot of
money, it will help you to...
- Understand how carpets are sold and have
more control over your purchase.
- Know a few basics about carpet, to give
you a buying advantage.
- Be aware of some of the problems to
avoid buying a defective one.
- Learn some of the ''Tricks of the Trade'
to avoid being ripped off.
Carpet Buying Guide
When you enter a carpet showroom you’re faced
with a confusing array of colours, styles, textures, fibres and
prices.
Because you don’t buy carpet that often, it's easy to feel
bewildered!
Wouldn’t it be
easier for you if you had a little knowledge before you entered the shop? Nothing
complicated, just basic.
Wouldn’t it also be re-assuring to know that the
salesperson has your interests at heart.
That they will give you the right advice and
they are committed to finding the right product to match your needs?
Are they asking the right questions to provide
you with the best outcome?
And if they are on a commission to sell as much carpet to as
they can, for their benefit, then you may not get the best deal for your
needs.
Carpet Faults and
Complaints
After selling my carpet warehouse, I became
an independent consultant and carpet quality claims inspector.
As an experienced carpet specialist, I get
instructions from major carpet companies to inspect problems in
carpets.
My function is to visit consumers at home to
diagnose faults and report on complaints about carpet quality.
A moment ago, I mentioned one of my inspections
that saddened me.
I would like to tell you about it
now.
The Distressed Retired
Couple
I was emailed instructions to visit an elderly
couple who had just bought a new wool-rich carpet for the entire
house.
They had registered a complaint because within
weeks of having their carpet fitted it had drastically changed in appearance, causing them to
be bitterly disappointed.
For this couple their new carpet was an
expensive treat funded by a portion of their life savings.
They had chosen a very good quality, 80% wool,
heavy weight, twist pile carpet, along with new, best quality, underlay – intended, as they
put it, “to see us out!”
Straight away, as I entered the Lounge and
looked down at the carpet, I knew what the problem was.
I was also almost certain that the manufacturer
would reject their claim.
I felt so sorry for them and bad about their
situation.
They had just spent several thousand pounds of
their valued life savings to carpet the whole house and it looked a
mess.
This was not the first time I had experienced
this problem.
|

Is this condition
inevitable or
avoidable?
|
So many of the inspections that I've
made involved the same condition.
As a result there are a
large number of disappointed, unhappy
consumers.
It’s a problem that the carpet
industry rejects, because the cause is not known and the cure not yet
found.
And because no solution is
known, the condition is dismissed by the trade as a ‘phenomenon’ and
therefore considered not to be a manufacturing
defect.
|
How To Safeguard
Yourself
As I drove away from the elderly couple, I
pondered their experience and the concerns of so many other consumers who are in the same
situation.
Now here comes the good part – for
you.
If they had bought a carpet made
by manufacturers that care enough to give a guarantee with this type of complaint they
could have been spared the disappointment. If only they had known
beforehand.
It’s too late for them now, but it need not be
the case for you.
|
In the
book I reveal what you need to look out for and how to find the carpet manufacturers'
brands that ensure you don't suffer the same experience as the retired
couple.
|
But I have one more story to
tell.
I want you to know about my visit to the elderly
lady that troubled me.
The Elderly Lady and The
Velcro® Strips
It was a beautiful sunny day in September, the
sort of day that puts a spring in your step, but that was about to change - a gloomy feeling
was about to overcome me!
My visit to inspect a newly laid carpet in the
home of a slightly infirm elderly lady turned out to be an uncomfortable
encounter.
As she greeted me at the door to her two-up,
two-down cottage she was very polite and welcoming, but straight away I could tell that she
was agitated.
She told me that she lived on her
own.
The rooms were clean, tidy and nicely furnished,
but somewhat cramped with all of her possessions.
The meeting was very civilised for most of the
time, until I tried to give her some helpful advice.
I should have kept it to
myself.
What I told her set her
off.
I was trying to help her, but that’s not how she
saw it.
My intention was to help cure her
problem.
My Carpet's Gone
Fuzzy
She told me that she had just spent over a
£1,000 for a new luxury wool carpet for her Lounge and after just a couple of months it had
gone horribly fuzzy on the surface.
She wanted to know why, and "What was I was
going to do about it?"
|

'Fuzzy' carpet
surface
|
She explained
that she had expressly chosen an expensive carpet to get the best quality she could
afford to last her a long time.
As we were talking she said:
"This is supposed to be a heavy domestic carpet, I’ve got the shop sample
still – wait a minute" and she went out into the kitchen to get it for
me.
|
Apparently, she had asked the retailer if they
could let her have the sample again, in time for my visit that day.
I studied the detailed information printed on
the label, on the back of the sample.
The label drew attention to the fact that the
carpet is likely to fuzz but that it would settle down with use, and in
time.
Had she not read the statement on the label
before she placed her order?
Had the retailer not
read the product description either?
An experienced carpet retailer should know that this carpet was not
suitable for her circumstances, despite the heavy domestic classification. Why did he or she
not advise the lady that this particular carpet was not suited for use in her
Lounge?
If I had been the salesperson, I would not have
recommended this particular carpet to her.
That's because it was a luxury carpet made of
100% wool in a loose, bold loop pile construction.
More suited to a bedroom than a lounge, it was
bound to disappoint.
Then I discovered the likely cause of her
problem. . . two Velcro® strips on the suction
head of her vacuum cleaner.
This is the point that I tried to advise
her.
Her problem would be solved by removing the
strips (or cover them up) to prevent further deterioration to the surface of the carpet
pile.
Oh dear! She may have been elderly and a
little unsteady on her legs, but her mind was sharp and her response was
immediate.
She spoke of how she had just bought the vacuum
cleaner, which was recommended to her and was expensive.
She said that she would be contacting her
solicitors to sue the carpet company and what a rotten job I had.
“You should get yourself a proper job!” she
said.
There was nothing I could say to calm her,
though I tried. She was animated and angry.
I was relieved to get out of the
house.
At the same time, I was disturbed by her
situation.
Who was at fault here?
The manufacturer, the retailer or the
consumer?
Unfortunately, there was no going back for her,
it was too late - but it need not be so for you.

Two Easy Ways to Get Back The Cost of
Your Guide Book
Just to give you a
little taster, here's an example (using two simple tips) of how it's possible, with very
little effort, to get the cost of your book
back.
Try
this...
|
You
will find that most of the larger retailers will
charge you for the delivery of
your carpet.
The latest I have seen is
£35.
Use the following tips to avoid
paying the charge.
They should easily cover
the download cost of this guidebook alone.
|

Collect your carpet and save
money!
|
Tactic
1
When you enquire about your carpet, ask the
salesperson the cost of delivery.
You could use it as a bargaining point – drop the charge and you’ll
place the order.
If they try to enforce
the charge, tell them you'll look elsewhere if they don't agree.
Remember, the way retail trade is at present,
they need the business - so losing a sale for the price of delivery is a negotiable
option.
The retailer can afford to make this concession
to you.
Tactic
2
If that doesn't work for you, then try this...
Arrange to collect the carpet yourself, if you
can, and ask to have the delivery charge knocked off.
Alternatively... Get your own fitter,
privately.
Find one listed in the Yellow Pages or ask
a member of family, a friend or a neighbour if they know of a good
one.
Or use Google to search online under ' NICF
carpet fitters' in your area.
If a carpet fitter comes recommended and
has a good reputation, then you will have a good contact.
They will also be pleased to add you to their
list of customers.
Ask the fitter for a price to fit the
carpet.
At the same time, ask them if they will collect
it from the shop for you.
As a gesture of goodwill, most fitters will say
yes, and charge you nothing for it.
There you have it - two ways of saving
£35.
The download cost of the guide covered -
easily.
The hard copy cost more than
covered.
And you have yet to uncover all of the other 42
money saving carpet tips to help you make further savings – every time you buy a
carpet.
